Guys....
I used to have a scratch built Limbo Dancer this plane is very similar to the Magic, (thanks Dr.P. for giving me the plans...!) I can say that the tail wheel is a must on this plane; however, due to the long (high) wheel supporting wires (undercarriage) the plane tends to tip on its wing....!@#$ and being a 3D machine this plane is light ie fragile....therefore I don't suggest using bolts on the wings...Guys stick with the rubber bands cause they are not as stiff as the bolts which maycause the wing to break on those lovely rough crashes.....
Mine has more than 200 flights and is still good...

By the way Hisham, I've been reading so many reviews about the Magic and many pilots say that moving the CG backwards would make this plane hover better.
What do you think Hisham? I'm still reluctant about adding some weight to the tail cos i'm not sure what will be the overall effect of moving the CG towards the tail, on the plane in general not just on the hovering.

A tail heavy plane is a need for hovering...
But you should log on some flying hours....yes
hours on this plane before you go on to hovering...!

HOVERING..

Two ways to enter a hover. The first is to fly along at cruise speed, idle the
motor, pull up and as speed bleeds off toward a stall, smoothly but firmly add throttle
and right rudder. You judgement and your particular model will determine the timing.
The other way is to slow down to near stall, apply full up elevator and throttle, and let
the propwash push the tail down, continue feeding in power till you are hanging on the
prop. Easir said. The critical 'secret' I have found is to not slam the throttle as the
model reaches zero speed/zero weight. The motor torque will throw the plane into all
kinds of torque-induced problems. And get a handle on the rudder/torque/throttle right
away, not after it is weightless. Because the tendency is to overcontrol to get the
model right, and power bleeds off, the plane stall, etc. Another critical point is a
smooth, straight entry. This will save you from making corrections into the hover. One
more idea: After takeoff, I have applied full right trim to the rudder. This induces
inherent problems like easier to stall, possible aileron trim problems, etc but it makes my
plane hover almost hands off alot of times. The elevator seems to be a one-time
correct/forget situation. Makes a PA-2 fat, dumb and happy! Matbe construct the
model with the vertical stab 1 degree right????
My big philosophy though is it is easier to correct the plane firmly while getting into
hover than to clean up torque problems after you are 'in the barrel'. It usually requires
over-controlling if you are in a hover and the bird is way off center, plus it seems to
bleed power and cause stalls. Any takers???



If you have the right airframe, mixing ( elevator-flaperon )and coordinate all 4 controlls
simultaneously,you should be able to enter and exit hover from any position.
You should be able to hover on the lift of the propwash over lowered flaperons with
nose up only 10-15 degrees.Any torque rolling should be controlled with cross
controlled rudder-aileron.Practice staying in the air while over controlling one controll
at a time. Start with rudder, give wild rudder inputs while maintaining altitude with rest
of controlls.Next practice keeping plane in air with full aileron input, you'll get good on
elevator fast.A correctly set up Morris the Knife is capable of allmost anything,entering
and exiting an inverted spin from a hover to a hover is easy (after a few hundred hours
practice).It takes a lot of practice hours in a short space of time to advance,but
maintaining skills only takes a few hours a week.

Thank you Hisham for the very detailed hovering technique. Actually i've been practicing hovering on the simulator and i must admit that it really helped a lot, however, i couldn't get the Magic to stand vertically like the Morris for instance.
Some Magic reviewers faced the same problem and moved their CG backwards, but they didn't mention how many inches or how to do that.
Would it be a good idea to only add a few grams to the tail? Are there any risks?

You need + tail weight (less stability)
+ More power (tune pipe)
+ More elevator throw (snaps faster)
+ Flaperons (radio mixing)

Thanks Hisham.
I shall try to add a few grams to see what happens, and if everything goes well, I'll move the battery backwards to reduce the overall weight.
